Custom Christmas decorations for offices and shopfronts

Decorations are the one December spend that can be reused for years — which changes how you should choose them.

Christmas gifts are consumed once. Decorations are not — a good set comes out of a box every year for as long as it survives. That single difference should change how you budget for them, and it usually does not.

Why does reuse change the maths?

Because you are buying an asset, not an expense.

A set of custom pieces used for five seasons costs a fifth of its price per year. Compare that to buying replacement decorations annually, which most offices quietly do, and the custom option often wins outright rather than costing more.

The condition is durability. A decoration that cracks in storage is a one-year purchase priced like a five-year one, which is worse than the cheap alternative it replaced.

What works well as a custom decoration?

Things that cannot be bought, and things that have to fit.

Something specific to the company. Your building, your product, your logo rendered as an ornament, a recurring in-joke made physical. The point of custom is that it could not have come from a shop.

Things sized to a particular space. A reception desk, a window ledge, a specific alcove. Off-the-shelf decorations are sized for someone else's building and it often shows.

Repeat elements. Sets of the same ornament in different colours, or the same shape at several sizes. Printing handles this well — one design, many outputs.

Ornaments as gifts. A dated ornament works as both decoration and client gift, and it is one of the few gifts that gets used every year rather than once. Worth reading alongside Christmas client gifts that do not look like everyone else's.

Should the logo be on them?

Depends where they live.

Internal spaces — reception, offices, the party. Keep branding light. Your logo on every ornament in your own reception reads as insecure rather than festive. Once, on a centrepiece, is plenty.

Shopfronts and public-facing displays — different job entirely. Here the decoration is doing marketing work and the brand should be legible from the street. Size, contrast and viewing distance matter more than subtlety, and colour matching becomes a real specification: see matching brand colours.

How big can a piece be?

Larger than most people expect, and usually made in sections.

Beyond a certain size, pieces are printed in parts and joined — which is normal, not a compromise, and the joins can be designed to disappear or to be part of the form. It also helps storage, since a large piece that dismantles goes back into a box that fits on a shelf.

Say at the brief stage where the piece will be stored. It changes the design.

What about hanging, mounting and safety?

Worth specifying rather than improvising in December.

Hanging points, wall fixings and stable bases are cheap to design in and awkward to retrofit. The same goes for weight — a shopfront piece that has to sit on a shelf safely is a different design from one suspended from a ceiling.

If a decoration goes anywhere the public can reach it, mention it early. Edges, stability and fixing method all get treated differently.

Can we add to the set later?

Yes, and this is the strongest argument for going custom.

Once the design files exist, making three more next year is a production job, not a design job. Sets can grow — a piece per year, a new colour, an addition when the company does something worth marking. Traditional manufacturing cannot do that affordably in small numbers; printing can.

It also means a broken piece is replaceable, which is what actually keeps a set alive across a decade.

When to order

Earlier than gifts, for a reason people find surprising: decorations go up at the start of December, not the end. Your effective deadline is roughly three weeks before the one you have in mind for gifting.

The rest of the timing logic is in when to order Christmas corporate gifts, and if you are already late, what is still possible.
