How to choose a personalised gift that actually gets kept

There is a difference between a personalised gift and a personal one, and almost every shop selling the first is quietly hoping you will not notice.

A mug with a name on it is a mug. The name is a sticker on a decision somebody else made. It gets used for a while, then it lives at the back of a cupboard.

What makes a gift personal rather than personalised?

The thing that makes it theirs has to be the object itself, not a label added at the end.

That sounds abstract, so: a plaque engraved with a couple's names is personalised. A model of the building where they met is personal. The first can be ordered from a catalogue with one field filled in. The second requires knowing something, and that is precisely why it gets kept.

3D printing is unusually good at the second kind, because there is no mould. The shape can be built around the person, the occasion or the joke, in a quantity of one, without tooling costs. That is the whole reason personalised gifts work as a category here rather than as an upsell.

What can actually be made?

More than most people assume, and the limits are rarely what they expect. Common requests at 3DOME Malta:

• Name and date pieces where the letters *are* the structure, not applied to it
• Photo reliefs — an image turned into a three-dimensional surface that reveals itself when backlit
• Miniature versions of real things — a house, a boat, a first car, a shopfront
• Objects from an in-joke that would be meaningless to anyone else
• [Portrait busts](/head-statues) of a person, a couple or a pet
• Cake toppers built around the actual couple rather than a generic pair

If you can describe it, it can usually be modelled. You do not need a design, a file, or the vocabulary to explain it properly.

How do you choose for a specific occasion?

A rough guide, based on what people ask us for and what they come back for.

Milestone birthdays reward specificity over expense. Something from the year they were born, or the thing they have talked about for a decade.

Weddings and anniversaries favour objects with two subjects — a shared base, two figures, a building, a date rendered as structure.

Retirements and leaving gifts work best when they reference the work rather than the person. Miniatures of a tool, a machine, a vehicle they drove for twenty years.

New homes are the easiest brief we get: a model of the house, from a photograph of the front elevation.

Memorial pieces need care and time. We take these slowly, and we would rather say so than rush one.

How far ahead should you order?

Further than you think, but not as far as you fear.

Simple personalised items — keyrings, charms, straightforward name pieces — are often ready within two to four working days. Anything that needs modelling from a photograph or a description takes about a week, and most of that week is design and your approval rather than printing.

For a fixed date, tell us the date when you enquire. 3DOME Malta will say honestly whether it is achievable before taking the order rather than after. We would rather turn a job down than deliver an anniversary present the week after the anniversary.

What does it cost?

Small personalised items typically fall between €10 and €35. Larger keepsakes and photo reliefs that need modelling from an image usually run between €45 and €120. You get a fixed price before anything is made.

There is no minimum order — one piece for one person is a normal job. And because there is no tooling, ordering one costs the same per unit as ordering one of ten. If you are buying for a group, that changes the maths in your favour rather than against it.

What if you only have half an idea?

That is the normal starting point, and it is enough.

Send a photograph, a rough sketch on the back of something, or three sentences describing what you are imagining. We will model something, show you a render, and adjust it before anything is printed. You are never committing to an idea you have not seen.

The gifts that work best usually start as a badly explained idea and get better through that conversation. That is the part a catalogue cannot do.
